Mechanics vs. Doctors

Monday, July 27th, 2009

So I recently went for my annual medical check up. I am sometimes late with my medical check-ups since I forget to schedule them regularly or I simply procrastinate and push them to a later date.

Here is the scary part: How many of us take better care of our cars than ourselves?

I know that I must visit the mechanic at least every 3-4 months to change the oil in my car and twice per year to change the tires for both the summer and winter season. Also, we usually take whatever advice our mechanic gives us and act on in it quickly. My brakes need changing? Do it right away. I need to adjust something? Do it right away.

In theory, we should also be this vigilant with our health. Doctor and dentist visits should also be scheduled regularly. Yet how often do we cancel these visits and reschedule them for another day? And how often do our doctors tell us to: 1) lose weight, 2) cut the salt/sugar, 3) other valid health advice? Do we take their advice and change our habits immediately or do we continue on our merry way? Therefore, can we conclude that we take better care of our cars than our bodies? The unfortunate part of all this is that life can go on without a car, but life becomes pretty difficult without proper health.

I guess it’s one of those crazy things that we humans do.
